Our first trip to visit this wonder that stood intact until 140 years ago was cut off at the entrance due to a visit from the Pope.

This controversial visit not only interrupted our attempt at making it to the Acropolis but also sparked a demonstration next to our hotel where people carried "Pope Go Home" placards and interrupted Maxine's nap on her first day! |

It never ceased to amaze us that such a structure stood for over 2000 years and was put to ruins only after the Turkish invaded Athens and used the Parthenon as a powder magazine which was consequently bombed. |
